Get to know the members of the RECETAS team, at Charles University Prague, Dr. Alžběta Bártová develops innovative interventions that connect older adults to community and wellbeing through social prescribing.

Can you introduce yourself and the organization you work for?

My name is Alžběta Bártová and I am a researcher and project coordinator at the Centre of Expertise in Longevity and Long-term Care (CELLO-ILC) at Charles University in Prague. I hold a degree in Husite Theology with and psychosocial sciences from the Hussite Theological Faculty and my Ph.D. in Longevity Studies from the Faculty of Humanities. My research interests center on dementia care, social inclusion, and the development of community-based interventions for older adults. At CELLO-ILC, we aim to bridge research and practice, contributing to the development of policies and services that enhance the quality of life for older individuals.

Why is loneliness a public health issue in the Czech Republic?

Loneliness has emerged as a significant public health concern in the Czech Republic, particularly among older adults. Factors such as demographic changes, urbanization, and the fragmentation of traditional family structures contribute to increased social isolation. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these issues, highlighting the need for effective interventions. Addressing loneliness is crucial, as it is associated with various health risks, including depression, cognitive decline, and increased mortality rates. Initiatives like social prescribing aim to mitigate these effects by promoting social engagement and community participation.

Can you give examples of other projects you worked on?

In addition to my work on the RECETAS project, I have been involved in several other initiatives focusing on dementia care and the well-being of older adults. Notably, I co-researched a project funded by Charles University (GAUK No. 760219) that explored the unmet needs of vulnerable older patients in both home and inpatient care settings. I have also contributed to studies examining the psychosocial aspects of long-term care and the integration of mental health support within these services. These projects aim to inform best practices and policy development in the field of gerontology.

Can you tell how COVID-19 impacted the research for RECETAS?

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the RECETAS project, particularly in terms of data collection and participant engagement. Lockdowns and social distancing measures limited our ability to conduct in-person activities and interactions. However, these challenges underscored the importance of the project’s objectives, as the pandemic heightened feelings of loneliness and social isolation among older adults.

What are the specificities of the RECETAS in Prague and with the public you work with?

In Prague, the RECETAS project focuses on integrating social prescribing into the urban environment, aiming to connect individuals with community-based activities that promote social inclusion and well-being. The target population includes older adults. Collaborating with local organizations and community centers, we tailor interventions to meet the specific needs and preferences of participants. This approach ensures that the activities are culturally appropriate and accessible, fostering a sense of belonging and community among participants.
