The RECETAS project in Prague
RECETAS project activities in Prague
In Prague, the RECETAS project focused on older adults living in urban areas. The experiments started in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. For many, this major public health crisis worsened the preexisting mobility limitations and lack of social contacts, resulting in increased distress.
Nature-based group activities have previously been found to have the potential to strengthen relationships and support well-being. They therefore appeared as a potentially relevant solution that deserved greater attention. Moreover, despite increasing urbanisation, Prague offers an ideal setting to test such interventions in an urban environment thanks to its wealth of parks and riverfronts.
For these reasons, a pragmatic randomized controlled trial was conducted with the collaboration of the local healthcare and social services partners. In contrast to a traditional randomized controlled trial, a pragmatic randomized controlled trial evaluates the intervention in real-world settings and tests effectiveness on typical patients.
Among the 300 participants, half underwent the intervention, while the other half was offered traditional intervention. Both groups were regularly asked to fill detailed surveys, in order for the researchers to be able to accurately assess the effectiveness of the intervention.
Aktivity projektu RECETAS v Praze

Old people (60+) with a risk of social isolation and loneliness, targeted by primary health care and outpatient care.
Eldery people with dementia endangered and family caregivers of vulnerable seniors living at home
Dyads with/without MCI of one of these
The recruitment was done in close cooperation with: Centre of Longevity and Long-term Care, Czech Alzheimer Society, general practitioners and other ambulatory specialists, nonprofit organizations, home care organizations working on long-term focus on targeted group and projects specialized in the well-being of the elderly and people suffering from dementia.
Social care organizations of Prague districts municipalities were important partners to identify and target older adults endangered by loneliness. Moreover, the contact with local media enhanced the recruitment process.
What is Nature-Based Social Prescribing?
Nature-Based Social Prescribing (NBSP) connects people with nature and their communities to improve wellbeing. Through activities such as group walks, community gardening, or outdoor social events, participants build relationships, increase physical activity, and strengthen their sense of belonging.
By promoting regular contact with nature, NBSP helps reduce loneliness and social isolation, supporting healthier, more connected communities.

Examples of good practices
Collective exercises in the city’s natural spaces are being expanded with the support of the municipalities of the Prague city. For example, open-air yoga classes are frequent. During the pilot part of the RECETAS project, a group of 15 seniors tried a Chinese type of Qigong exercise in the peony garden.
